This miniature is composed by two crusaders guiding the dead knight who is holding the relic. This miniatur was inspired one of the most famous legends Castilian knight, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also knows as “El Cid Campeador”. His legend was magnified by the influence of the 12th-century epic poem of Castile, El cantar de mío Cid (“The Song of the Cid”) and says that after the Cid passed away during the siege of the city of Valencia, he was dressed with his armor and tied to this horse Babieca, and he was sent to the front line of the battle to encourage his soldiers, charging against the Almoravids and winning the battle. This scene was beautifully immortalized by Charlton Heston in the movie El Cid (1961).
In case you haven’t seen it, we highly recommend you that movie! Here you have the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE7QDaBoo_4
The relic makes a little tribute to one of our favourites videogames, the Assassin’s Creed saga, specially the first one. If you have played that games, you already know what it is… the apple of Eden!
