The Portuguese Expeditionary Corps (CEP) was Portugal’s principal military force in the First World War, serving in close cooperation with the British Army in the trenches of the Western Front. The Portuguese contingent took part in efforts to contain the German advance in several sectors, most notably during the Battle of La Lys in 1918.

The figure depicts a 2nd Sergeant of the 7th Infantry Regiment (RI7). He wears the distinctive bluish-grey cotton tunic of the Portuguese Army and is equipped with the British Sam Browne belt and sling system. Among soldiers, this uniform was nicknamed the ‘lead coffin’ because of its mixed grey, blue, and lead-like coloration.

He is also shown wearing the War Cross, 2nd Class.
